The Dan Markham mysteries bring a noir feel to postwar Leeds. Dan is an enquiry agent, not a police detective, and that gives him a different place in the city. He works for clients with private problems, follows leads the police may not want, and has to rely on his own judgement when official help is out of reach.

The series opens with Dark Briggate Blues in 1954. A woman hires Dan to find out whether her husband is unfaithful. It sounds like a routine job, until the husband is killed and Dan becomes the obvious suspect. Suddenly, the investigator has to clear his own name while keeping his client alive and working out who has framed him.

It gets personal very quickly.

Dan's experience in military intelligence during his National Service gives him useful skills, but he is not a superhuman hard man. He is resourceful, wary, and often forced to think his way out of trouble. The stories have the shadowy pressure of classic private-eye fiction, yet their setting is firmly British: rain-slicked streets, coffee houses, pubs, jazz, postwar shortages, and a northern city still finding its feet.

Leeds in the 1950s is a place where the war is recent enough to shape people's choices, while new anxieties are already arriving. In The New Eastgate Swing, set in 1957, Dan works with retired Detective Sergeant Baker on a missing-person case that turns into murder. The discovery that the dead man may be an East German defector or a spy pulls them into Cold War tension much closer to home than either expects.

Baker is an important counterweight to Dan. Their partnership mixes private investigation with experienced police instincts, and their working relationship grows as the cases get more dangerous. The books also give space to Dan's personal life, which keeps the danger from becoming merely a string of plot turns.

Expect compact, tense mysteries with jazz in the background and a sharp eye for the uneasy years after the war. The tone is darker and more urban than Nickson's earlier historical series, but the same interest in ordinary people facing powerful forces remains.
