The DI Tom Harper series follows a Leeds policeman through the last years of the Victorian era and into the early twentieth century. It begins in 1890, when Tom is a detective inspector in a city growing fast, full of mills, railways, crowded housing, political arguments, and deep divides between rich and poor. By the final books, the world around him has changed dramatically, but crime keeps finding new ways to thrive.
Harper is a practical, decent investigator who takes his work seriously. He listens, follows the evidence, and knows that a neat official answer is not always the same thing as the truth. His cases often start with one troubling death or disappearance, then widen to reveal gang activity, corruption, labour disputes, violence against women, anti-Semitism, wartime fear, or the pressures facing people with no power.
Leeds matters as much as any recurring character.
The series uses real social tensions and events as part of its backdrop.
