Author bio

Cynthia Ellingsen grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan, and the state’s small towns, family histories, and big-water landscapes continue to shape her fiction. Her novels often begin with someone at a crossroads, then add a close-knit community, an old secret, and a second chance that proves more complicated than expected.

She attended Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied writing and theater. Those interests fit neatly together, since her books make room for lively conversation, tangled relationships, and characters who have to figure out what they really want.

After school, Ellingsen spent time in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles to pursue creative work. She waited tables, went to auditions, and wrote screenplays while building a life in a city full of people chasing their own unlikely plans.

She kept writing.

Her first novel, The Whole Package, follows three lifelong friends whose personal lives have all hit a rough patch. Instead of drifting apart, they try to build a business together, a restaurant designed for women, while dealing with grief, money trouble, marriage, and the messiness of friendship.

Ellingsen returned to relationship comedy in Marriage Matters, which brings together a daughter, mother, and grandmother, each facing questions about love and commitment. With The Girls of Firefly Cabin, she wrote for younger readers, following four preteen girls at summer camp as they form a friendship while carrying worries they are not yet ready to share.

Her Starlight Cove books brought her Michigan roots to the foreground. Set in a fictional northern Michigan town, The Lighthouse Keeper, The Winemaker’s Secret, A Bittersweet Surprise, and A Play for Revenge combine small-town life with mysteries rooted in family history. A lighthouse, a vineyard, a candy shop, and a long-closed theater all become places where the past refuses to stay quiet.

The later standalones widen that interest in secrets across generations. In The Choice I Made, a return to a Wisconsin resort unsettles a woman’s marriage and family life. When We Were Sisters centers on estranged sisters brought back together by an inherited beach house. The Lost Letters of Aisling and The Cut of the Moon use letters, diaries, and old estates to connect present-day women with difficult stories from the past.

Her books tend to favor emotional stakes over violence. They are about people rebuilding trust, revisiting home, and deciding whether the life they once planned is still the one they want.

A Michigan native, Ellingsen lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with her family. She continues to write stories with mystery, history, romance, and room for hope.
