Series background & context

The Crime Society books are Diana A Hicks at her darkest and most world-driven. This is not a loose collection of mob romances. It is a connected universe built around powerful families, inherited status, arranged deals, hidden clubs, and the constant fear that affection can be turned into a weapon.

A lot of the tension comes from the gap between luxury and threat. The setting may be penthouses, elite schools, and polished parties, but the rules underneath are brutal. Characters are valued for what they can secure, who they can marry, what family they belong to, and how useful they are in the next power play. That makes even the romantic scenes feel a little sharper, because nobody in this world ever gets to forget the cost of being wanted.

Power is the real love language here.

Within that umbrella, Hicks uses different books to open different doors into the world. Dark Beauty and Wolf's Lair work like entry points, showing how young characters are pulled toward danger before the main duets fully kick in. Lost Raven offers a smaller, more personal side trip. Then the bigger arcs dig into heirs, rivals, daughters used as bargaining chips, men who expect obedience, and women who have to decide what they are willing to risk to keep a sense of self.

What makes the series work is the shared atmosphere. Whether the focus is on a bargain, a forced marriage, a forbidden attraction, or a desperate chase, the books all feel like they belong to the same ecosystem. Names matter. Bloodlines matter. Reputation matters. One bad decision can start a family war, and one private moment can become public leverage overnight.

If you like dark mafia romance with a strong sense of hierarchy and continuity, this is the page to camp out on. The Crime Society world is steamy, controlling, messy, and very interested in what happens when people raised to obey finally decide they want something for themselves.
