Hicks uses the romance to keep the pages moving, but the series also works because the world keeps closing in from every direction.

If you like dark romance with a strong school setting, class tension, and a heroine learning just how expensive glamour can be, the Raven Duet is a good fit. It keeps the focus tight on Aurora and Enzo, but the backdrop is always bigger than the couple, and that is what gives the series its bite.
