Series background & context
The Cole Brothers books are interconnected romance-suspense stories built around a powerful family and the people pulled into its orbit. Some of the novels are softer billionaire romance, some lean harder into danger, and some push straight into mafia-adjacent suspense. What links them is the feeling that love never arrives at a quiet time.
The series opens its door through Derek and Valentina, whose story begins with a chance connection, a housing crisis, and a bargain that quickly gets too personal to stay neat. One of the nice things about this series is how varied the setups are. Even when the tropes shift, Hicks keeps the same rhythm. The attraction lands fast, but trust takes work, and there is usually a threat, secret, or old wound waiting to complicate everything.
Family matters a lot in these books. Sometimes that means loyalty. Sometimes it means pressure, obligation, and people meddling when they should not. The heroes may be wealthy or well connected, but that does not make them calm. The heroines usually have strong survival instincts, and that balance helps keep the books from feeling like simple rescue fantasies.
Overall, the Cole Brothers series is a good fit if you like romance with motion. These books are steamy and emotional, but they also like a plot. There are enough connections between the characters to make the world feel lived in, yet most of the stories can still be picked up on their own once you know the family at the center of it.
