Creatures of Darkness is Kiersten Fay's darker urban fantasy romance series, set in an alternate future where vampires revealed themselves to the world a century earlier. The series starts with A Wicked Hunger, and it really is best read from the beginning. Coraline Conwell wants nothing to do with vampires. Then her husband is murdered, she becomes a target herself, and the one person standing between her and disaster is Mason, a vampire assigned to investigate her husband and keep her alive. Coraline quickly learns that her past is murkier, and far stranger, than she knew.

From there, A Wicked Night and A Wicked Desire keep following Coraline rather than resetting with a new couple. That matters, because this is as much one long survival arc as it is a romance. Coraline is pulled between Mason and the far more dangerous Knox, while kidnappers, curses, spirits, and rival supernatural forces keep closing in. At the same time, her own powers begin to surface, and learning what she is becomes just as important as deciding whom she can trust.

Trust is the real monster here.

The setting does a lot of work. Fay uses vampire-controlled towns, shadowy businesses, hidden safe houses, strange cottages, underground threats, and a wider postwar world where the rules have shifted but never settled. You get the sense that society has adapted to vampires only because it had no choice. That gives the books a tense backdrop, where even quiet scenes carry the possibility of surveillance, betrayal, or a sudden burst of violence.

What carries the series from book to book is Coraline herself. She begins wary, grieving, and badly outmatched, then slowly grows into someone who can face the supernatural on its own terms. The romance is steamy, but the bigger hook is watching her adapt to a world that keeps changing the rules. If you like urban fantasy romance with an ongoing heroine arc, messy loyalties, and a strong dark streak, this is the lane.
