Series background & context
The Covert Police Detectives Unit series drops fast paced investigations and undercover work into the quiet fields of Unity, Maine. At its core is a small team of detectives and agents who are willing to blend into Amish life when crimes spill over into the community.
The series opens with Undercover Amish, where former Amish woman turned detective Olivia Mast returns to her hometown to solve a murder no one else can investigate. In Amish Under Fire, Amish Amnesia, and later titles, other members of the team step forward, guarding threatened women, tracking human traffickers, and trying to protect victims who would rather disappear than talk to the police.
Each book focuses on one main couple a law enforcement officer or former soldier and an Amish or ex Amish character caught in the case. The stories deal with weighty issues domestic abuse, kidnapping, stalking, modern day slavery yet they are written as clean, inspirational romantic suspense. Faith, forgiveness, and the question of how to move past trauma are as important as the final arrest.
Unity's Amish community is never just a backdrop. Detectives have to respect church rules, earn trust from wary families, and sometimes go undercover in plain clothes and buggies to gather information. That tension between an insular faith community and the outside legal system fuels much of the conflict and makes small choices, like whether to tell an elder the truth, feel just as risky as chasing a suspect.
Prequel and companion stories, including The Amish Schoolteacher's Escape and shorter novellas, show how some of the characters first met and how the detectives began working with the community. Later novels expand the scope, following survivors as they build new lives in Unity and revisiting earlier heroes who now have families of their own.
Readers can pick up the books out of order, but starting with Undercover Amish allows you to watch the Covert Police Detectives Unit form and see how recurring characters grow across the series. Expect cliffside chases, tense courtroom scenes, and quiet kitchen table moments where characters finally say what they have held back for years.
For readers who like Amish settings but also want high stakes plots and a strong thread of justice, this series offers a bridge between cozy rural life and the darker realities of crime that Emma feels called to address.
