Series background & context

The Covenant books are where Jennifer L. Armentrout first mashed up Greek mythology, boarding‑school drama, and high‑stakes romance. Set in a world where the offspring of gods and mortals still walk among us, the series follows Alexandria “Alex” Andros, a half‑blood who refuses to stay in the role society assigns her.

In this universe, Hematoi are descended from the unions of gods and mortals. Children of two Hematoi are pure‑bloods with godlike abilities; children of a Hematoi and a human are half‑bloods, stronger than mortals but considered second‑class. Half‑bloods can train as Sentinels, hunting corrupted daimons, or they can be forced into servitude in pure‑blood homes.

Alex has grown up on the run with her mother, only to be dragged back to the Covenant academy after a brutal attack. Daimon, the prequel novella, and Half‑Blood, the first novel, drop her back into a world of strict rules and old grudges. She’d rather die fighting daimons than scrub floors, but her place at the academy isn’t guaranteed. She has to catch up on years of missed training under the watchful eye of Aiden St. Delphi, a disciplined pure‑blood Sentinel she’s absolutely not allowed to fall for.

As the series moves through Pure, Deity, Apollyon, and Sentinel, Alex uncovers prophecies, godly manipulation, and a terrifying truth about her own role as the Apollyon, a living conduit for divine power. Seth, another Apollyon, becomes first an ally and then something far more complicated as gods and daimons maneuver to use them as weapons.

Romance, as usual in Armentrout’s work, isn’t separate from the plot. Alex’s feelings for Aiden clash with laws that forbid relationships between pures and half‑bloods. Her connection with Seth challenges her ideas about fate, free will, and what it means to be seen as more weapon than person. The series doesn’t shy away from violence or sacrifice, but it balances those with sarcasm, friendship, and moments of ordinary teenage life—classes, tests, and bad cafeteria food.

The novella Elixir, told from Aiden’s perspective, and other bonus material fill in emotional gaps around the climactic battles. When Covenant ends, it leaves enough threads for the Titan spin‑off to pick up years later, showing how the world and its surviving characters cope with the fallout.

Readers who enjoy magical academies, forbidden romance, and gods who behave like messy, dangerous people rather than distant icons will find plenty to sink into here. Covenant laid the groundwork for much of Armentrout’s later myth‑tinged work while still standing solidly on its own.
