Series background & context

The Origin series picks up the Lux universe years after the main alien invasion, when humans and Luxen are trying—uneasily—to share the same planet. Instead of revisiting Katy and Daemon, it follows Evelyn “Evie” Dasher, a seemingly ordinary human teenager whose life is built on carefully managed half‑truths.

In The Darkest Star, Evie goes to a notorious club where humans and Luxen mingle and meets Luc, a beautiful, arrogant boy who clearly isn’t just another alien. Readers of the Lux books know Luc as a powerful Origin, a hybrid born from brutal experiments. To Evie he’s just infuriating, magnetic, and oddly familiar. A violent raid on the club drags her into a world of government oversight, missing Origin children, and questions about who she used to be.

The Burning Shadow and The Brightest Night deepen those questions. Evie discovers gaps in her memory and evidence that her identity has been altered more than once. A deadly virus sweeps across the country, conveniently blamed on Luxen, while shadowy officials use fear as cover for new experiments. Luc’s fierce protectiveness hides his own guilt and secrets, and their relationship has to survive both external threats and the nagging suspicion that their shared past might not be as simple as lost-girl‑meets‑alien‑boy.

Where Lux balanced high‑school drama with intergalactic politics, Origin leans harder into conspiracy and aftermath. The series explores what it means to grow up in the ruins of someone else’s war, surrounded by propaganda, prejudice, and people who have very good reasons not to trust one another. Evie’s journey is about reclaiming her agency in a life that’s been repeatedly rewritten without her consent.

At the same time, the books still deliver the hallmarks of this universe: sharp banter, found family, swoony romance, and action scenes that move from back alleys to secret labs. Familiar faces from Lux appear throughout, grounding the story and showing how earlier choices continue to ripple outward.

For best effect, Origin is usually read after the main Lux novels and the adult spin‑off Obsession, but it’s paced and explained clearly enough that new readers can still find their footing in Luc and Evie’s chaotic, dangerous world.
