Series background & context
Confluence Academy marks a clear shift in Penelope Bloom's work. Instead of billionaires, bosses, and modern-day chaos, this series drops into a deadly fantasy world shaped by empire, elemental magic, and beast bonds. It is still romance, and still recognizably Bloom in the banter and tension, but the scale is much bigger and the consequences are much harsher.
The story begins with Nessa Thorne in Unbound. She expects death when she volunteers for the Empire's selection, only to be taken to Confluence Academy instead, where students are branded by elemental affinities and trained into weapons. The academy is brutal enough on its own, but Nessa's mark is wrong. She bears the silver spiral of an unbound, a power the Empire claims should no longer exist.
That changes everything.
From there, the series becomes part survival story, part school fantasy, and part slow-burn romance. Nessa is not simply trying to pass classes or fit in. She is trying to understand what she is, who can be trusted, and why the Empire has lied about the past. Her connection to Raith Hollow, the other volunteer and a powerful fire affinity, becomes one of the main emotional engines of the books. Their bond carries attraction, suspicion, and political danger all at once.
The academy itself matters as more than a backdrop. It is a place designed to strip students down and remake them into something useful for the state. The branding system, the elemental divisions, the beast bonds, and the constant threat of failure all reinforce that idea. Power here is never free. To gain it, characters have to survive trials, make alliances, and accept that someone is always watching for weakness.
By the time the story moves into Unveiled, the series is clearly playing a longer game. Nessa has survived the first stage, but survival only makes her more visible. Her dragon bond, her growing power, and the rumors around her place her at the center of something larger than the academy itself. That means the books are not just about romance or competition. They are also about control, history, and the question of who gets to define what power should be.
If you are coming to Penelope Bloom for the first time, this is not the place to expect a light rom-com. But if you want deadly trials, magical politics, and a romance that builds under real pressure, Confluence Academy is where her newer work gets the most ambitious.
