2002

On the day he claims his adult name, a young Orosini tribesman returns from a sacred vision quest to find his people massacred. Rescued by strangers tied to a hidden order, he becomes Talon of the Silver Hawk, remade as an assassin and agent in a long game of vengeance and balance.

Series background & context

Conclave of Shadows picks up after the Serpentwar Saga and introduces a new kind of fight for Midkemia: one waged by a small, secretive network instead of open armies. At its center is the Conclave itself, a loose alliance of magicians, spies and warriors gathered by Pug to confront threats long before they become full‑blown wars.

The trilogy opens with Talon of the Silver Hawk. High in the mountains lives the Orosini, a small, proud people far from the Kingdom’s main stage. A young man on his vision quest—soon named Talon of the Silver Hawk—returns to find his entire clan slaughtered at the orders of the ambitious Duke of Olasko. Rescued by strangers with their own agenda, he’s offered a terrible bargain: be remade as an instrument of subtle revenge, or die with his people’s memory.

Taken under the wing of the Conclave, Talon is reshaped into Talwin Hawkins, a charming young nobleman trained in arms, languages and courtly manners. King of Foxes follows him as he serves the very duke who ordered his tribe’s destruction, waiting for the right moment to turn the man’s own plots back on him. The book mixes court intrigue, personal vendetta and the slow, dangerous game of pretending to be loyal while you wait to strike.

In Exile’s Return, the focus shifts to Kaspar of Olasko himself. Cast down and transported to a far corner of the world in the fallout of earlier events, he is forced to confront what he’s done and who he’s been. His journey from bitter exile to reluctant ally brings him into contact with a terrifying artifact—black armor that should not exist—which in turn draws the Conclave into larger, darker mysteries that point toward future wars.

The tone of Conclave of Shadows is more cloak‑and‑dagger than siege‑tower. You still get sword fights and dash‑for‑your‑life escapes, but many of the key battles are for influence: who trusts whom, who controls which border, whose rumor takes root in a royal court. The Conclave itself is an interesting answer to a long‑running problem in the series: how do you respond to scattered hints of cosmic danger without terrifying the entire world every time you act?

For readers, this sequence serves as a bridge. It pulls threads from the Serpentwar books, develops them through Talon’s and Kaspar’s personal arcs, and then points directly toward the interplanar stakes of the Darkwar Saga. If you enjoy stories about reinvention, secret orders and vengeance tempered by hard‑earned wisdom, Conclave of Shadows is a rewarding stop on the journey.
