The second book pushes Breslin, Asher, and Landon closer to the truth about who they are and what they want. Love, jealousy, and old damage make every choice harder and every feeling bigger.

Series background & context

The Complicated Hearts Duet is where Ashley Jade really leans into the word unconventional. This is not a standard one-couple romance stretched over two books. It centers on Breslin, Asher Holden, and Landon, and from the start it is clear that nobody's feelings are going to stay in neat, easy categories.

Complicated Hearts 1 begins with Breslin still carrying the wreckage of what Asher did to her. She loved him hard, he hurt her badly, and she spent years trying to put herself back together. Then life throws them back into each other's path. At the same time, Landon enters the picture with his own plans, his own emotions, and his own connection to both of them. Ashley Jade uses that triangle, and all the uncertainty inside it, as the whole engine of the duet.

That is where the story earns its title.

Asher is not written as a simple villain who comes back begging. One of the more interesting things in the first book is that he has changed, or at least thinks he has. He believes he understands himself better now. Landon, meanwhile, is not just there to complicate the romance from the outside. He matters. His heart is involved. His choices matter. By the time the first book ends, the question is not just who Breslin will choose. It is whether the idea of choice even works in such a messy emotional setup.

The second book pushes all of that further. Feelings become harder to deny, identity becomes harder to sidestep, and every character has to deal with what honesty will actually cost. Ashley Jade is upfront that these books are intense, explicit, and not for readers looking for polished behavior from perfect people. The emotional temperature stays high because nobody in this story gets to hide from desire, jealousy, or old damage for very long.

The duet also has a strong new adult atmosphere. You feel the pressure of youth, self-discovery, reputation, and the kind of decisions people make before they really know themselves. There are hints of sports, music, and social performance around the edges, but the real focus is always the triangle at the center and the way each person changes the others.

If you are curious but cautious, the simplest description is this: Complicated Hearts is a duet about love, identity, and emotional chaos, told through three people who cannot go back to pretending they only want simple things. Read both books in order. The first sets the fuse. The second deals with the blast.
