Author bio
Cindy Gerard grew up in a very small Iowa town, the kind of place where everybody knew everybody and a local library could shape a life. She was a big reader early on, long before she thought seriously about becoming a novelist.
At first, writing was not the plan.
She has said that when she sat down to write her first book, her goal was simply to finish it. Selling it came later. But once that first sale happened, the direction of her life changed in a hurry.
For years, Gerard balanced writing with a demanding career as a trainer for the Iowa Department of Human Services. It was practical, people-focused work, and it kept her close to families in crisis, hard choices, and the messy side of real life. That background helps explain why even her lighter romances tend to carry real emotional pressure.
Her early books were contemporary category romances for Bantam Loveswept and Silhouette Desire. Novels like Maverick, Slow Burn, Tempting the Tycoon, and The Bridal Arrangement show one side of her range, small towns, cowboys, guarded heroines, and second chances that feel personal instead of grand.
Then the books got bigger.
With The Bodyguards, Gerard moved into the kind of romantic suspense that would become her signature. Those novels brought more danger, more action, and a stronger team dynamic, while still keeping the love story front and center. The series also helped push her onto the bestseller lists and introduced a lot of readers to the fast, high-stakes version of her work.
From there she built out Black Ops Inc., beginning with Show No Mercy, and later the linked One-Eyed Jacks books. Those series lean into covert missions, loyalty between operatives, and the pleasure of watching very capable people fall hard under pressure. Readers who like protective heroes, competent women, and a lot of momentum usually end up very happy there.
She has picked up plenty of recognition along the way, including a RITA Award, a National Readers Choice Award, and a Romantic Times award for Feel the Heat. Still, the appeal of her work is easy to describe without the hardware. Gerard writes books that move. Even when the plot is big, the emotions stay clear.
Off the page, the details she has shared are pleasantly down to earth. She has long lived in Iowa, is married to Tom, enjoys horses and gardening, and has written fondly about reading and recharging at a family cabin in northern Minnesota.
That grounded feeling runs through the work, too.
Whether she is writing a cowboy romance, a bodyguard story, or a team of off-the-books operatives trying to stop a disaster, Gerard tends to come back to the same things, loyalty, home, resilience, and the relief of finding the one person who will stand their ground beside you.
