The Bluewater Affair

by Cindy Gerard

2003

Pregnant Susannah Hobson returns to her Colorado ranch after being abandoned, only to learn her stepmother may have been murdered. Rancher Travis Dean offers safety, but Susannah's growing secrets put them both at risk.

Series background & context

Family Secrets takes a familiar emotional setup and adds a pulpy suspense engine underneath. The core premise is that a hidden past, and a dangerous government experiment, have left a trail of damaged lives and a family connection nobody fully understands at the start.

Cindy Gerard's The Bluewater Affair sits right in the middle of that idea. Susannah Hobson returns to her Colorado ranch pregnant, vulnerable, and already reeling from one loss, only to find herself pulled into questions about her stepmother's death and the wider mystery tied to Code Proteus and the Extraordinary Five.

What works well about the series is that it never forgets the human side of the conspiracy. Yes, there are secrets, shadowy histories, and people searching for answers. But the books are still romances first. Homecomings, grief, trust, and the hope of making a family out of wreckage are what keep the stories moving.

The ranch setting in Gerard's book also gives the whole thing a useful contrast. The emotional tone is warm and personal, even while the backstory hints at something much bigger and stranger.

If you enjoy romance series where each book gives you a couple plus one more piece of a larger hidden puzzle, Family Secrets has that pull. It is a mix of family drama, suspense, and connected-series momentum.
