Author bio
Christopher Rice was born in Berkeley, California, in 1978 and grew up in a house where writing was part of everyday life. His mother was novelist Anne Rice, his father was poet and painter Stan Rice, and his aunt Alice Borchardt also wrote historical fantasy.(en.wikipedia.org)
He spent his early childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area before the family moved to New Orleans when he was ten. The shift from a progressive school in the Castro District to a traditional Southern prep school gave him a front row seat to clashes over religion, class, and sexuality, material that later surfaced in his fiction.(pt.wikipedia.org)
Rice graduated from Isidore Newman School in 1996 and briefly attended Brown University and New York University, but formal study lost out to storytelling. In his early twenties, while back in New Orleans during his mother's recovery from a diabetic coma, he drafted his first novel, A Density of Souls, a dark tale of four teenagers and homophobia in contemporary New Orleans that became a New York Times bestseller.(pt.wikipedia.org)
Through the 2000s he followed that debut with a run of suspense novels, including The Snow Garden, Light Before Day, Blind Fall, and The Moonlit Earth. Many of these books put gay characters at the center of the story and treated queer life, addiction, and family secrets as part of the thriller engine rather than side notes.(pt.wikipedia.org)
By thirty he had four New York Times bestsellers to his name, a Lambda Literary Award on his shelf, and even a mention as one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men Alive.(simonandschuster.com)
His fiction took a more overtly supernatural turn with The Heavens Rise and The Vines, award nominated horror novels set in and around New Orleans that blend swamp atmosphere, parasites, and haunted plantations with tight character work. Those books paved the way for the Burning Girl series, starting with Bone Music and continuing in Blood Echo and Blood Victory, where survivor Charlotte Rowe uses drug induced superpowers to hunt predators while wrestling with her own past.(simonandschuster.com)
At the same time, Rice began writing erotic romance. The Desire Exchange stories, beginning with The Flame and The Surrender Gate and followed by novellas like Kiss the Flame and Dance of Desire, revolve around magical candles, a French Quarter shop, and supernatural Radiants who nudge people toward the desires they are afraid to pursue. Under the pen name C. Travis Rice he also writes the Sapphire Cove novels, steamy male male romances set at a luxury resort on the Southern California coast.(christopherricebooks.com)
In 2017 he and Anne Rice co wrote Ramses the Damned: The Passion of Cleopatra, a sequel to her earlier mummy novel, and later Ramses the Damned: The Reign of Osiris, continuing the adventures of immortal pharaohs and queens in Edwardian Europe. Off the page he has served as an executive producer on television adaptations set in his mother's Immortal Universe, including series built around The Vampire Chronicles, Mayfair Witches, and the secretive Talamasca.(penguinrandomhouse.com)
Rice is also a co creator of The Dinner Party Show and the TDPS podcast network with his longtime friend Eric Shaw Quinn, a side of his career that mixes sketch comedy, pop culture talk, and deep dives into true crime.(1001darknights.com)
He lives in West Hollywood, California, and keeps moving between suspense, supernatural fiction, and romance, returning again and again to themes of chosen family, resilience after trauma, and queer people fighting for a life that finally feels like their own.(barnesandnoble.com)
