Author bio

Christopher Hopper was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1979, and he grew up in a world shaped by music, performance, and church life. Long before he became known for military science fiction and fantasy, he was around recording studios, instruments, and the kind of creative work that teaches you rhythm, pacing, and how to hold an audience.

Reading did not come easily at first.

Hopper has spoken openly about being labeled a slow reader in school, even while teachers noticed he could write. The big change came when he was around eighteen and discovered Stephen R. Lawhead's Song of Albion books. That experience helped turn reading from a chore into an obsession, and it also gave him a model for the kind of immersive world-building he would later chase in his own fiction.

Before writing became his full-time path, he spent years balancing several lives at once. He worked in music, spoke publicly, served in ministry, and kept writing on the side. Early books like Rise of the Dibor and later Curse of the Spider King, written with Wayne Thomas Batson, show a writer building his craft through fantasy, spiritual conflict, and big moral stakes.

Then he made the jump.

In 2019, after many years of writing alongside other work, Hopper left paid church work and committed himself fully to fiction. That decision changed the scale of his career. His collaborations with J.N. Chaney on Ruins of the Galaxy and Ruins of the Earth reached a much wider audience and helped establish him as a familiar name for readers who like fast-moving sci-fi, military teams under pressure, and large fictional universes that keep expanding.

Those books are a good guide to what Hopper does well. Ruins of the Galaxy begins with a routine mission gone bad and grows into a long-running space war full of squad tension, shifting loyalties, and galaxy-sized stakes. Ruins of the Earth starts with Patrick "Wic" Finnegan guarding researchers in Antarctica, then turns into an alien invasion story with collapsing governments, hard choices, and a lot of momentum. Imperium Descent widens the frame into empire politics, rebellion, and identity, while Oblivion Awaits shows his interest in harder science fiction, with an orbital habitat, sabotage, and an alien signal hanging over everything.

His fantasy work runs on a different engine, but the concerns are often similar. The Berinfell Prophecies follows young heirs discovering powers and responsibilities they did not ask for. The Sky Riders mixes steampunk, apprenticeship, racing, and conspiracy in a floating world above the clouds. The White Lion Chronicles leans more openly into allegory and spiritual warfare, asking what innocence, corruption, courage, and sacrifice look like in an invented world.

Across genres, Hopper tends to come back to the same kind of person: the soldier, the apprentice, the outcast, the reluctant leader. His characters are usually pushed into situations that are bigger than they expected, then judged by what they do next. Even when the settings get wild, with portals, empires, ancient artifacts, or sky pirates, the emotional center stays close to loyalty, family, duty, and endurance.

He is also a voice actor and performer, which makes sense for a writer who clearly enjoys the sound of story as much as the structure of it. His books have hit bestseller lists in science fiction categories, and several have picked up award nominations and other recognition, but the simpler truth is that he built his audience book by book and kept going.

Christopher Hopper now lives in New York with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children. He still seems drawn to big, energetic hobbies too, including music, travel, endurance cycling, and RC aircraft, which feels very on brand for a writer whose stories rarely stand still.
