Christopher Paolini Books in Order

Christopher Paolini was born on November 17, 1983, in Southern California, but Paradise Valley, Montana, is the place most tied to his books. He grew up there with his parents and younger sister, Angela, surrounded by the Beartooth Mountains. That landscape, with its big skies and rough edges, later fed straight into Eragon.

He was homeschooled, read widely, and spent a lot of time at the library. He has said he loved books by Bruce Coville, Frank Herbert, Raymond E. Feist, and Ursula K. Le Guin, among others. He also wrote poems and short stories when he was young, so the jump into fantasy writing was less sudden than it might seem.

Then came a teenage challenge that got out of hand in the best possible way.

Paolini started imagining Eragon as a teenager and wrote the first draft at fifteen. Before he began, he plotted the whole adventure, and while working he did hands-on research that matched the book's world: camping, making bows, forging blades, building shelters, and learning about older weapons and customs. He revised the manuscript, his family self-published it, and together they handled the long, unglamorous work of turning it into a real book.

That family push mattered. They spent 2002 and early 2003 promoting Eragon at schools, bookstores, and libraries, and the self-published edition eventually reached Carl Hiaasen through his stepson. Knopf republished the novel in August 2003, and Paolini was still a teenager when it became a New York Times bestseller. It is the kind of publishing story that still sounds a little unreal.

He kept writing instead of stopping there.

The next books, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance, turned what was first planned as a trilogy into the four-book Inheritance Cycle. In 2011, Guinness World Records recognized him as the youngest author of a bestselling book series. Readers often come to these novels for dragons, sword fights, and magic, but they stay for the training arcs, the languages, the travel, and the feeling that big choices carry real weight. He returned to that world again with The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm and later Murtagh, which shifts attention to one of the saga's most troubled figures.

He eventually moved into science fiction with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, a much larger story about xenobiologist Kira Navárez, alien contact, and a war that spreads across human space. Its prequel, Fractal Noise, is tighter and stranger, built around a survey team crossing an empty planet toward a hole that should not exist. Even with the change in setting, some of his interests stay the same: lonely people under pressure, unusual creatures, big systems, and the cost of survival.

Paolini still lives in Paradise Valley, Montana. He has continued writing in both the World of Eragon and the Fractalverse, and he still seems drawn to stories where a single discovery, a dragon egg, an alien relic, a hole in the ground, changes everything.
