Children of the Dark Books in Order

The Children of the Dark series starts with a teenager who already has too much on his shoulders. Will Burgess is still in high school, but he is also helping raise his little sister, Peach, in a home shaped by neglect, addiction, and constant instability. That human mess matters. Before the monsters fully arrive, the books are already interested in bullies, first love, family damage, and the way some kids have to grow up faster than they should.

Then Jonathan Janz starts tightening the screws. In Children of the Dark, Will is dealing with schoolyard cruelty and a crush on Mia Samuels when two outside threats close in on his town. One is the escaped Moonlight Killer. The other is older, stranger, and buried in the woods of Savage Hollow. What begins as coming-of-age horror turns into a creature story, a survival story, and a nightmare about the things adults fail to see until it is too late.

The setting does a lot of work here. The woods are not just spooky scenery. They feel ancient, watched, and full of bad history. Janz likes caves, storms, dark roads, and places where kids make their own rules because the grown-ups are absent or useless. That gives the series an old-school horror feel, but the emotional core stays close to Will, Peach, and the friends he is trying to protect.

It gets ugly fast.

The Night Flyers picks up after the wreckage of the first book and does not pretend that trauma simply fades. Will is now older, separated from the people he loves, and trapped in the Sunny Woods Rehabilitation Center, where human cruelty is still very much part of the danger. At the same time, the supernatural threat has not gone away. The underground Children remain out there, and new winged creatures with glowing red eyes push the story into even darker territory.

What ties the series together is Will's refusal to stop fighting for the people who matter to him. These are bloody, fast-moving books, but they are also sad, angry, and unexpectedly warm in places. If you like horror that mixes monsters with friendship, family loyalty, and the pain of growing up, this series is an easy recommendation. Start with Children of the Dark and move straight into The Night Flyers, because the second book builds directly on the first.
