Author bio

Cherry Adair was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and moved to the United States in her early twenties. She settled in San Francisco, where she built a career in interior design long before fiction became her full-time job.

That earlier career makes a lot of sense once you know her books. Interior design is visual, practical, and a little theatrical, and Adair's novels tend to feel the same way. They move fast. The settings matter. Rooms, landscapes, danger zones, boats, compounds, cabins, all of it is there to be used, not just admired.

She was also a serious reader, and eventually reading was not enough.

Before she sold a novel, Adair wrote seventeen books. That detail tells you plenty about the kind of writer she is. She did not arrive with one lucky manuscript and a charming origin story. She arrived with pages, practice, rejection, stubbornness, and the willingness to keep going until the work finally broke through.

Her first published novel was The Mercenary in 1994. A few years later came Kiss and Tell, the book that helped open up her best known fictional world, T-FLAC, a secret counterterrorism unit that gave her the perfect frame for action, danger, and all the emotional chaos that comes from throwing very capable people into impossible situations. Readers who love Hide and Seek, In Too Deep, On Thin Ice, and Hot Ice usually come for exactly that mix.

Those books also show what Adair does well in plain terms. She likes momentum. She likes globe-hopping trouble. She likes heroines who can think on their feet, and heroes who may be highly trained but are still very capable of making a mess of their personal lives. Her romantic suspense is rarely quiet. Even when the plot slows long enough for two people to talk, something is usually about to explode.

She has never stuck to just one flavor of suspense, either. In Edge of Danger and the rest of the Edge trilogy, she folds paranormal abilities into the T-FLAC setup. In the Lodestone books, beginning with Hush, she leans further into psychic gifts and hidden networks. In Cutter Cay novels like Undertow, she swaps covert ops for treasure hunters, dangerous waters, and a family of modern-day adventurers.

Adventure is the through line.

Outside the novels, Adair has also spent years encouraging other writers. She has taught workshops, mentored unpublished authors, and spoken pretty bluntly about the writing life. Her message has never been dreamy. Writing, in her view, is work, and the answer is usually to sit down and do more of it.

Today she lives in the Pacific Northwest, near Seattle, with her husband. The scenery may be calmer than some of her plots, but her books still carry the same charge they always have, high stakes, strong chemistry, and people trying to survive the mission while figuring out what, and who, matters most.
