Author bio

Bobby Adair has described himself as an Air Force brat, and his public author pages place his birth in Michigan while noting that he lived in around a dozen states before finishing high school. That restless background fits his fiction. His stories are full of people on the move, trying to outrun disaster, build a shelter, or carve out one decent life in a very bad world.

For years, writing was not the day job.

Before readers knew him for zombies, plagues, and dark jokes, Adair worked as a programmer. In his own telling, a lot of that life involved cubicles, computer screens, caffeine, and daydreams that kept turning into stories. Those stories piled up until he finally pushed them into the world, and once he did, he found the lane that suits him best, fast, tense speculative fiction with ordinary people under pressure.

A public bio from the mid-2010s says he and his wife, editor, and creative partner Kat met in Austin in 2007, moved to Highlands Ranch, Colorado in 2012 after layoffs, and later made their way back to Texas. The same bio mentions two grown children, a love of photography, and two rescue dogs, Beezle and Disco. Those little details help explain why even his bleakest books tend to feel lived in.

He also writes like someone who has seen a little of the world.

In his Goodreads bio, Adair says he has traveled in India, stood on high mountains, swum with sharks, and even been arrested once. Whether he is writing a zombie outbreak in Texas or a space war far from Earth, that appetite for motion and trouble seems to follow him onto the page. His characters rarely get to sit still for long, either.

Most readers start with Zero Day, the opening book in the Slow Burn series. It throws a slacker named Zed Zane into a zombie collapse in Austin and then adds the twist that makes the series memorable: Zed is infected, but not gone. That idea carries through Infected, Destroyer, and the later books, where the mix of horror, gallows humor, friendship, and sheer momentum keeps the pages moving.

Adair did not stay in one corner of the genre. Ebola K Book 1 and its sequels lean into outbreak thriller territory, with mutated disease, terrorism, and hard choices made under pressure. The Last Survivors, written with T.W. Piperbrook, pushes hundreds of years into the future and mixes post-apocalyptic survival with ruined-world mystery. Then there is Freedom's Fire, a military space opera about enslaved humans, alien overlords, and rebellion. Even Dusty's Diary shows another side of him, meaner and funnier, built around one man's running complaint that the apocalypse is nowhere near as convenient as pop culture promised.

Across all of these books, a few things keep showing up: survival under lousy odds, people improvising their way through collapsed systems, suspicion of authority, and characters who talk and think like real people instead of cardboard heroes. Texas turns up often. So does the idea that a bad day can get much worse, but a joke can still sneak in anyway.

By the mid-2010s, Adair was writing full time and sharing book news alongside his photography. He comes across as funny, skeptical, and a little allergic to pretension. That suits the books. They move fast, hit hard, and usually sound like they were written by someone who would rather tell you a sharp story than give a speech.
