Author bio

Cherie Priest was born in Tampa, Florida, in 1975. Because her father was in the Army, her family moved often while she was growing up, with time spent in Florida, Texas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. That restless early geography shows up in her fiction, where places tend to have long memories and unsettling things tucked just out of sight.

She studied at Southern Adventist University and later earned a master's degree in professional writing from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Chattanooga mattered to her early work. She lived there for years, wrote her first novels there, and used the region's history, old houses, graveyards, and family stories as raw material for the Eden Moore books.

Her first novel, Four and Twenty Blackbirds, introduced Eden Moore, a young woman pulled into a Southern family mystery full of ghosts and buried harm. It was followed by Wings to the Kingdom and Not Flesh Nor Feathers. These books established a pattern that runs through much of Priest's work: ordinary people meet something impossible, then have to keep moving because nobody else is going to clean up the mess.

Then came Boneshaker.

Published in 2009, it shifted the action to an alternate 1880s Seattle, where a disastrous drill has unleashed a deadly gas and left part of the city walled off with the undead inside. The novel launched the Clockwork Century books, a mix of steampunk machinery, airships, war, zombies, and people trying to get through a very bad day. Boneshaker won the Locus Award and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Award, and it was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula Awards.

Priest doesn't stay in one lane for long. Maplecroft and Chapelwood rework the Lizzie Borden story as cosmic horror. The Cheshire Red books, beginning with Bloodshot, follow a vampire thief with a chaotic found family. Grave Reservations and Flight Risk bring a lighter touch to mystery, pairing an unreliable psychic travel agent with a Seattle detective. Her standalones, including The Family Plot, The Toll, The Drowning House, and It Was Her House First, return to haunted homes, strange towns, grief, and the bad decisions people make when fear starts calling the shots.

She also writes for younger readers. I Am Princess X blends prose with comic pages as a teenager follows clues suggesting her supposedly dead best friend may still be alive. The Agony House uses a similar mix of text and illustration for a New Orleans haunted-house mystery.

The monsters are memorable, but the people usually carry the story.

Priest has written short fiction, novellas, essays, and work in shared worlds as well. She has also been involved with genre conventions and has written about urban exploration, an interest that makes sense once you've spent time in her abandoned hospitals, ruined cities, decaying hotels, and homes that should have been left alone.

She moved from Chattanooga to Seattle in 2006, returned to Tennessee in 2012, and moved back to Seattle in 2017. She lives there with her husband, a large dog, and a three-legged cat. Her official biography also notes a fondness for zombies, goth music, and cheap red wine, which feels less like a brand statement than a useful warning about what might be waiting in the next book.
