Series background & context

The Chandler Sisters novels follow Phylicia, Joanna, and Britt Chandler as they try to find their footing after the death of their mother. The sisters are close, but grief has changed the shape of their lives, and their father soon adds another shock by leaving town and making decisions they do not understand.

Reason to Breathe starts the series with the sisters facing their childhood home, a possible sale, and a new plan involving a group of cottages. Phylicia, called Phee, becomes especially close to Quinn Mitchell, a man connected to her father's business. Their growing relationship sits beside the bigger question of what the three sisters will do next.

They have spent so long caring for other people that choosing a future feels unfamiliar.

Each following book gives another sister room to lead. Chasing Dreams continues the family story as Joanna works through her own hopes and complications. In Finding Wings, Britt is still making sacrifices for family when she meets EMT Rafe Stuart, who has regrets of his own. The romances are important, but the series is really built around sisterhood, grief, and the push to create a life that is not only defined by duty.

The books return to Langhorne, Missouri, the same community associated with the Chicory Inn novels. That gives the stories a comfortable small-town setting, with familiar faces and the sense that people are never entirely alone, even when they would rather hide.

Expect contemporary romance with real family strain, not a string of easy misunderstandings. Raney lets the sisters be frustrated, sad, and uncertain, then gives them time to talk through what hurts. Start with Reason to Breathe for the clearest picture of the family and its turning point.
