Author bio

Deborah Raney was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1955, but she grew up on a farm in Rice County, Kansas. She was the oldest of five children, and the rhythms of small-town and family life would later show up again and again in her fiction.

Her wish to write started early. As a Kansas girl reading Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, Raney saw that a farm kid could grow up to tell stories too.

The dream took time. She attended Emporia State University and Kansas State University, married her husband Ken, and spent years raising their family. Early in their marriage, she also worked in a New York nursing home, an experience that stayed with her.

Her first novel, A Vow to Cherish, grew from that experience and from a family discussion about Alzheimer's disease. The story follows a marriage tested by a devastating diagnosis, and it became the start of her fiction career. It was later adapted as a television film, which brought the book to a wider audience.

Raney's stories usually begin with ordinary people facing a hard turn in life. A missing spouse, a strained marriage, grief, a family secret, or the difficult work of starting over can all become the center of the book. Her characters often live in small towns or close-knit communities, where neighbors notice when something is wrong and family ties can be both comforting and complicated.

Her later books show the range of that approach. Beneath a Southern Sky opens the Camfield Legacy with a woman whose past unexpectedly returns. The Chicory Inn novels follow a Missouri family turning their longtime home into a bed-and-breakfast while their adult children bring fresh worries through the door. In the Hanover Falls novels, a deadly fire leaves a whole community carrying loss. The Chandler Sisters books bring three sisters together after their mother's death as they try to build new lives.

Family is at the heart of it.

Raney writes openly from a Christian perspective, but the stories make room for doubt, resentment, fear, and slow repair. Readers who enjoy her work often come for the romances and stay for the family conversations, the second chances, and the way people learn to be honest with one another.

Her work has received honors including the RITA Award, the Carol Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the HOLT Medallion. She has also taught at writers' conferences and spent many years serving American Christian Fiction Writers.

Today, Raney and Ken live in southeast Missouri after moving from their native Kansas to be closer to family. They enjoy road trips, Friday garage-sale outings, time with children and grandchildren, and breakfast on their screened porch. Those small, lived-in details feel right at home beside the communities she creates on the page.
