Dead Drop

Series background & context

Chance Mock is one of Sisavath's purest action-thriller creations. He is an independent contractor who can be a soldier, spy, assassin, or bodyguard depending on the job. He works outside governments, outside normal chains of command, and usually one step ahead of people with more money and influence than sense.

That independence is the whole point.

The series starts with The Freelancer, which introduces Chance as a man people turn to when the official channels are too slow, too compromised, or too scared. Imogen Tolliver helps open the door into his world, while Tarot, the one voice he truly trusts, gives the series a strong back-and-forth dynamic. From there the books widen quickly into a globe-trotting web of contracts, secret organizations, intelligence agencies, vendettas, and cross-border chaos.

What makes these books work is the balance between competence and pressure. Chance is very good at what he does, but Sisavath never lets the jobs stay simple. A straightforward contract turns into layered betrayal. A clean exit turns into international fallout. Powerful people keep deciding they can use him, control him, or remove him. That is usually their last bad idea.

The tone is a little lighter on its feet than the Babylon books, even when the violence spikes. There is swagger here, but not in a lazy way. The series knows Chance is good, and then it spends a lot of time proving how expensive that can be for everyone around him. The books move fast, hit hard, and reward readers who like capable protagonists under constant fire.

If you want Sisavath doing modern action with spies, mercenaries, surveillance, and menacing shadow organizations, Chance Mock is probably the clearest place to go.
