Series background & context
The Chance books center on Harriet Basantes, better known as Harry, and Desi Thompson, two women whose first love never really went away. By the time the series opens, they are adults with very different lives behind them. Harry is a successful orthopedic surgeon. Desi has spent years trying to be dutiful, even when doing the right thing has made her miserable. When Desi turns up in Harry's world after a violent attack, the story wastes no time making clear that this reunion comes with real stakes.
Second chances are the heart of the series.
Across One More Chance and A Good Chance, Ali Vali mixes romance with recovery, family pressure, and suspense. Harry is protective, capable, and almost painfully loyal. Desi has to rebuild her sense of safety while facing the choices that separated them in the first place. The relationship is emotional and deeply rooted in history, but the books do not pretend that old feelings solve everything on their own. Trust has to be rebuilt, and so does Desi's life.
The setting helps a lot. Vali uses Louisiana and New Orleans to give the books both warmth and danger. Hospitals, family homes, and wedding plans exist right beside court dates, old grudges, and the threat of violence from Desi's past. That contrast gives the series its rhythm. One chapter can feel domestic and tender. The next can remind you that these women are still in the middle of something frightening.
There is also a strong supporting cast, especially as the second book opens outward. Rachel, Desi's sister, becomes more central, and the books pay attention to how chosen family can matter just as much as blood. Old relationships keep echoing into the present, which gives the series more weight than a simple reunion romance.
If you like contemporary romance with a protective streak, emotional payoff, and a little suspense running underneath it, Chance is an easy series to settle into. Start with One More Chance and keep going in order. These books work best when you watch Harry and Desi fight for a future they should have had years earlier.
