Series background & context

The Cain Casey series is Ali Vali's long-running New Orleans crime saga, and it knows exactly what kind of story it wants to be. At the center is Cain Casey, heir to a powerful criminal empire, raised from childhood to lead, protect, and, when necessary, destroy. The books follow Cain as she balances business, family, revenge, and the one thing that makes her far less predictable, love.

That love is Emma Verde. Emma comes from a very different world, and the clash between her values and Cain's life gives the series much of its pull. Their relationship is not a side plot. It is the engine. While rival families, federal agents, and old enemies circle the Casey organization, the real drama often comes from the simple fact that Cain wants both power and a real home life, and those two things do not fit together easily.

Family is the real currency here.

These books are packed with mob politics, shifting alliances, betrayals, and violent payback, but Vali keeps bringing the story back to children, cousins, siblings, partners, and inherited loyalty. Cain is not written as a lone-wolf crime boss. She is part of a wide, complicated network, and every decision ripples outward. That makes the series feel bigger than a romance and more personal than a standard crime thriller.

New Orleans matters just as much as the cast. The city gives the books heat, color, history, and tension. Sometimes it feels glamorous. Sometimes it feels bruised and dangerous. Either way, it suits Cain perfectly. As the series grows, the world around her grows too, with recurring characters, other families, federal pressure, and new threats from outside the city.

The tone is intense but readable. Vali likes momentum, so even the longer books tend to keep moving. There is action, but there is also domestic life, children being raised, marriages forming, and the constant question of whether Cain can protect the people she loves without losing them to the life she leads.

If you want a series that blends criminal power struggles with a committed central romance, this is the place to start. Begin with The Devil Inside and read forward. The emotional payoff comes from seeing Cain and Emma's world get bigger, riskier, and more tightly bound with every book.
