Author bio

Celia Anderson grew up in a small ex-mining town in the Midlands, a long way from the coast that keeps turning up in her fiction. Before writing full time, she spent years in schools and worked as both a teacher and an assistant head. That background still shows. Her books care about ordinary people, messy families, second chances, and the quiet ways a community can hold someone up when life wobbles.

The sea matters in her books.

Anderson came through the Romantic Novelists' Association New Writers' Scheme, graduating in 2013, and her published career got its real push when she won a competition for a contract for Sweet Proposal. That novel was published in 2013 and gave her a start after plenty of learning on the job. She has described the editing process as a steep curve, but a welcome one. It helped turn writing from a long-held hope into the work she now does every day.

Her fiction often starts with a warm, slightly unusual premise and then grounds it in recognisable feelings. In 59 Memory Lane, published in 2019, a nearly 111-year-old woman in a Cornish village is guarding a secret about memory and long life. The Cottage of Curiosities returns to the same world of Pengelly, with more hidden history, family mystery, and a gentle magical thread. In The Secret Gift of Lucia Lemon, a parcel containing cash, maps, and a broken compass nudges a careful woman toward a bigger life.

She also has a knack for stories where houses, keepsakes, recipes, and small local rituals carry real emotional weight. Coming Home to Mistletoe Cottage wraps family strain, Christmas chaos, and an old recipe book into a cosy festive novel. Then, in 2024, she began a new phase with books such as Life Begins at 50!, A New Lease of Life, and Living the Good Life, stories that focus on later-life friendship, village life, and fresh starts.

Older protagonists are central to her work.

That is one reason readers tend to find her books both comforting and refreshing. Anderson writes about widows, divorcees, grandmothers, long marriages, grown-up children, and people who assumed their boldest days were behind them. There is usually humour, a good amount of neighbourly meddling, and sometimes a light brush of magic, but the feelings underneath stay grounded. Even when the setup is whimsical, the emotional questions are not.

Place matters just as much. Her imaginary settings, from Cornish fishing villages to inland communities and seaside towns, are never just backdrops. They shape the stories. She has written openly about her love of close-knit places, whether by the sea or in the country, and that fondness runs through everything she does.

She now lives in Brighton and has described herself as a hands-on granny who balances writing with travel, family life, and a fair amount of cake. Alongside the novels, she has stayed closely involved with the Romantic Novelists' Association in volunteer and leadership roles. It feels like a good fit. Her books are full of people opening doors they thought were closed, and finding out that a quieter life can still contain big surprises.
