Cathy Woodman came to fiction by way of the consulting room, not a writing course. She began her working life as a small-animal vet, and that practical, hands-on background has shaped almost everything readers remember about her books. Even when her stories lean into romance or family drama, there is usually a sense that real work is being done and real people are muddling through.

Woodman spent much of her childhood in East Devon after her parents moved there when she was four, and she has said the area still feels like home. That landscape, the market towns, winding lanes, farms, village gossip, and animal life, later became the backbone of her fiction. Before that, though, she was working long hours as a vet and reading through quiet spells on night duty, already half-dreaming about becoming an author.

Writing became more serious after her children were born. She gave up full-time veterinary work, joined a creative writing group, and started sending out stories and novels while piling up rejections. Her break came in 2002, when she won the Harry Bowling First Novel Award, a turning point that led to her debut novel, Under the Bonnet, being published in 2004.

Those first books were contemporary family dramas rather than country-vet romances. Under the Bonnet, Our House, Family Matters, and The Boy Next Door all deal with ordinary domestic lives under pressure, marriages wobbling, children complicating everything, money troubles, home repairs, old flames, and the mess that arrives when people think they can keep every plate spinning. Readers who like Woodman in this mode usually respond to her eye for everyday chaos and her refusal to make family life look neat.

Then she circled back to the world she knew best.

With Trust Me, I'm a Vet, later published in the US as City Girl, Country Vet, Woodman launched the Talyton St George books, the series most closely linked with her name. The fictional Devon market town let her bring together veterinary work, village life, romance, and community, with Maz Harwood and Alex Fox-Gifford at the center of the early books. Because Woodman had actually done the job, the animal cases, the surgery scenes, the emergency calls, and the long hours feel grounded instead of decorative.

The series widened as it went on. Books like The Sweetest Thing, The Village Vet, Vets in Love, Follow Me Home, and Springtime at Cherry Tree Cottage move around the town and give other characters room to take the lead, from bakers and midwives to doctors, farmers, and horse people. What links them is the setting: a place where people know one another's business, animals are never far away, and love stories sit alongside work, family strain, illness, recovery, and fresh starts.

There is comfort in these books, but not in a sugary way.

Woodman tends to write about people who are bruised, overworked, newly single, stretched too thin, or wondering whether they have chosen the wrong life. She likes second chances. She also likes capable women, lively villages, and the kind of practical problem, a sick dog, a failing practice, a rundown farm, a wedding headed for disaster, that forces her characters to stop pretending everything is fine.

Alongside the Cathy Woodman novels, she has also written historical fiction as Evie Grace, drawing on rural settings and, in some cases, family history. More recent author notes place her in Devon, where she has worked part-time as a vet as well as writing. That mix, storyteller and animal professional, helps explain why her fiction feels both warm and firmly planted on the ground.
