Cass Morris Books in Order

Cass Morris is a writer and story editor based in central Virginia. Her best-known work is the Aven Cycle, a Roman-inspired fantasy series in which magic, religion, military power, and political ambition are all tangled together.

Her route to fiction has run through classrooms, stages, bookstores, and a lot of Shakespeare.

Morris earned a BA in English and History from the College of William and Mary in 2007, then completed a Master of Letters in Shakespeare studies at Mary Baldwin University in 2010. Her graduate work focused on friendship and relationship dynamics in Shakespeare's comedies, an interest that fits neatly with the family loyalties, alliances, and rivalries in her later fiction.

From 2010 to 2017, she worked as Academic Resources Manager at the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, Virginia. She wrote more than 20 teaching guides for Shakespeare's plays, led workshops, supported students and teachers, and contributed to academic publications. The American Shakespeare Center Study Guide: From Class to Cast reflects that practical, performance-minded approach to helping readers and students engage with a play.

Then came Aven.

Morris began drafting From Unseen Fire in November 2011 as a National Novel Writing Month project. The first draft was done the following June, but getting it ready for publication took years of revising and reshaping. When the novel arrived in 2018, it introduced Aven, a city and republic with clear ancient Roman roots, except its people live alongside elemental magic.

At the center of From Unseen Fire is Latona of the Vitelliae, a woman with dangerous Spirit and Fire magic who has learned to keep herself small in a society built to limit her choices. Her story meets that of Sempronius Tarren, an ambitious senator hiding his own forbidden magical gift. Readers who enjoy political maneuvering, close family bonds, slow-building romance, and problems that cannot be solved with a sword alone will find plenty to follow.

The next books, Give Way to Night and The Bloodstained Shade, widen the conflict beyond Aven's streets. They bring war in the provinces, threats within the city, religious tension, corrupt power, and the difficult work of protecting a republic that is still deciding what it wants to be. The books keep returning to questions of duty, ambition, courage, and what people owe each other when public life turns dangerous.

Morris has also written the standalone second-world fantasy short story The Price. Outside fiction, her work in performance and education continues to shape her career. She is Story Editor at Mythik Camps, where she helps develop mythology-based interactive theatrical experiences and other story projects for young people.

She also co-hosts Worldbuilding for Masochists, a podcast about the nuts and bolts of building fantasy and science-fiction worlds. Away from the page, Morris has mentioned embroidery, tabletop gaming, and old television as favorite pastimes. It all makes sense for a writer who clearly enjoys how stories are built, shared, performed, and pulled apart for fun.
