The Betrothed

by Kiera Cass

2020

Lady Hollis Brite has grown up at Keresken Castle dreaming of catching King Jameson’s eye, and suddenly he wants to make her queen of Coroa. When she meets Silas, a thoughtful refugee from neighboring Isolte, Hollis begins to question whether a glittering crown equals the life she truly wants.

Series background & context

The Betrothed duology moves away from Illéa into neighboring courts where the trappings feel more like a storybook kingdom than a dystopian future. Here, crowns are heavy with tradition, alliances are sealed over banquets and balls, and a single royal favor can change the course of a young woman’s life overnight.

In The Betrothed, readers meet Hollis Brite, a noblewoman who has spent her youth at Keresken Castle in the kingdom of Coroa. Like many girls at court, she’s grown up hoping to catch King Jameson’s eye. When he suddenly declares his love and begins showering her with attention, gifts, and promises, the dream seems to be coming true. Hollis imagines herself as queen, only to discover that life beside a king comes with expectations she isn’t sure she can meet.

Her certainty really crumbles when the Eastoffes arrive—an exiled family from neighboring Isolte seeking refuge from a cruel ruler. Among them is Silas, a soft‑spoken young man who sees Hollis as more than a charming court favorite. Their connection is instant but complicated, and as Hollis learns more about the politics that drove the Eastoffes from their home, she starts to question both Jameson’s judgment and her own idea of happily ever after.

Then everything goes wrong in a single, devastating night.

The Betrayed picks up in the aftermath, with Hollis grieving, displaced, and trying to rebuild a sense of self in Isolte. Welcomed by the Eastoffes’ relatives, she finds both comfort and friction in her new surroundings, especially with Etan, a sharp‑tongued cousin who distrusts Coroans on principle. Their prickly dynamic unfolds against a backdrop of spies, uprisings, and plots to unseat Isolte’s tyrannical king.

Over the course of the second book, the story widens from one girl’s romantic dilemma into a larger question of what kind of rulers Coroa and Isolte deserve. Hollis, once mostly concerned with gowns and gossip, is pushed to use her insight, courage, and influence in ways she never anticipated. The duology explores grief and second chances, loyalty to family versus loyalty to conscience, and how love can grow in the wake of real loss.

Readers who enjoy court intrigue, lavish settings, and slow shifts from light romance into higher stakes will find those threads running throughout both books. There’s less dystopian edge than in the Selection novels and more focus on fragile alliances, dangerous kings, and a heroine learning that the life she deserves may look very different from the crown she first chased.
