Author bio
Caroline Fyffe was born in Waco, Texas, but Waco was only the first stop. Her father served in the U.S. Air Force, so she spent her childhood moving from place to place, learning early how quickly a landscape, and the people in it, can change.
Horses were the constant.
From a young age, she loved them, and that interest shaped much of her adult life. She studied communications at California State University, Chico, then built a long career as an equine photographer, spending more than twenty years around barns, arenas, trailers, and show grounds. If her westerns feel lived in, that background is a big reason why.
Writing came almost sideways. During long days at horse shows, she started filling the downtime with fiction, drawing on her love of the American West and the kinds of practical, capable people who had always interested her. The work stuck. So did the setting.
That origin story fits her books.
Fyffe's first novel, Where the Wind Blows, set the course she would keep following: western historical romance with heart, danger, and a strong sense of place. The manuscript won Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award under its earlier title, Chasing Jessie, and the finished book also picked up Wisconsin RWA's Write Touch Readers' Award. From there she kept building worlds instead of one-off stories, especially in the Prairie Hearts and McCutcheon Family novels.
Readers who start with Montana Dawn or Before the Larkspur Blooms usually notice the same thing. Fyffe likes frontier towns that feel busy and connected, not empty backdrops. Her books are full of ranch hands, widows, sheriffs, drifters, sisters, children, storekeepers, and people who may not look important at first but matter a great deal by the end. She returns again and again to second chances, found family, weather-beaten communities, and the question of what makes a place feel like home.
She also has a knack for writing men who look sturdy on the outside and uncertain underneath, and women who are trying to hold onto their dignity when the world gives them very little room. In books like Evie, Texas Twilight, and Heart of Dreams, the conflict often comes from practical problems as much as romance: money, reputation, land, family expectations, a journey gone wrong, or a secret that refuses to stay buried. That grounded approach is a big part of her appeal.
That same mix shows up in her later work. The Colorado-set Heart of Eden opens a larger family saga around the Brinkman sisters and the Five Sisters Ranch. Heart of Mine and An American Duchess widen that story from a frontier town to England, while keeping the emotional focus on loyalty, class, and trust. She has also stepped outside her western lane now and then, as she does in the contemporary novel Three and a Half Minutes, but even there the pull toward healing and new beginnings is easy to spot.
She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, and they have two grown sons. Even after moving across series and settings, she keeps circling back to the same things that first drew her in: horses, wide-open country, and people trying to make decent lives in hard places.
