Author bio
Caroline Linden grew up in a military family and describes herself as a Midwesterner and an Air Force brat. Long before she became a romance novelist, she wanted to be an astronaut, or maybe a fashion designer, depending on the day. Books were always part of the picture. She read widely, from classics to mysteries to romance, even while steering herself toward math and science.
At Harvard University, she studied mathematics and met the man who would become her husband in the math department. After college she moved with him to Florida and worked writing computer code. Programming paid the bills, but fiction looked far more fun. Even so, writing did not happen right away.
It took snow, toddlers, and blackouts.
When the family moved back to the Northeast to be closer to relatives, better schools, and Fenway Park, life got louder and messier. She had two small children, a house that needed major electrical work, and long winter days that felt especially endless after Florida. During one of those stretches, she sat down at the computer and started inventing people who would actually do what she wanted. That impulse became serious work. Five years, three manuscripts, and plenty of rejection later, her first sale, What a Woman Needs, finally came through.
That start tells you a lot about her books. Even when they are set in ballrooms, grand houses, or gaming hells, they care about practical pressures as much as romance: money, family duty, reputation, inheritance, and the awkward things people do when those things collide. She often writes Regency England not as a museum piece, but as a lively place full of gossip, political strain, scientific curiosity, and room for secrets. That helps explain why spies, blackmailers, schemers, and stubborn families keep wandering into her love stories.
She likes a love story with wit, heat, and some trouble built in.
You can see that range across her backlist. I Love the Earl won the RITA Award and shows her gift for turning a sharp, funny premise into a tender romance. Love and Other Scandals leans into humor, social pressure, and the thrill of two people who enjoy sparring as much as flirting. My Once and Future Duke and the rest of The Wagers of Sin bring money, class, and risk to the foreground, while About a Rogue opens a family-centered series about succession, grief, and unexpected second chances. Even a shorter piece like Written in My Heart lands on strong feeling with a clean, satisfying finish.
Over the years, her novels have been translated into seventeen languages, and her work has also won the Daphne du Maurier Award, the NJRW Golden Leaf Award, the NEC-RWA Reader's Choice Award, and the RITA Award. She has been a finalist for that last prize more than once as well. Those facts matter, but what readers often seem to remember is something simpler: the books are smart, warm, and very easy to keep reading.
She still lives in New England with her family, near Boston, and she still sounds like someone who enjoys both order and chaos. There is math in the way her plots fit together, and a fan's delight in the way her characters collide. It is a nice combination.
