Captive Books in Order

The Captive books are Brighton Walsh's darker, more suspense-driven romances. They still care a lot about chemistry and emotional payoff, but the setup is much more dangerous than what you get in her small-town series. These are stories about people under pressure, people on the run, and people whose feelings keep getting tangled up with survival.

Captive opens with Madison Frost, a lonely young woman whose wish to escape her tightly controlled life comes true in the worst possible way when she is kidnapped. The man holding her, Ghost, is a mercenary with his own code, his own secrets, and more tenderness than Madison expects to find in a situation like this. The book lives in uneasy space. Fear, curiosity, power imbalance, and attraction are all working at once, which gives the romance a tense, claustrophobic pull.

Exposed stays in the same orbit but shifts to Riley and Evie. She has spent years hiding behind a carefully built new identity, and he is the ex who gets pulled back into her life when the past catches up. That makes the second book feel a little different from the first. There is still danger and forced proximity, but the emotional hook is more about second chances, old hurt, and whether trust can survive after years of lies.

These books keep the stakes high and the rooms locked.

What makes the series work is that it does not forget the people inside the plot. The suspense matters, but so do loneliness, shame, and the need to be truly seen by someone who knows what you are capable of or what has been done to you. Ghost and Riley are protective in the way Walsh heroes often are, but Madison and Evie are not passive passengers. They have their own reasons for hiding, resisting, and deciding when to let somebody in.

Tonally, this is not full-on horror and it is not nonstop darkness. It is romance first, just with sharper edges, heavier secrecy, and more external danger than the rest of Walsh's catalog. If you usually like her for the heart and the heat but want something moodier, this duo is the obvious place to go.

Start with Captive and follow with Exposed for the best experience. Together they make a compact connected series that feels distinct from Starlight Cove or Havenbrook while still sharing Walsh's interest in damaged people choosing love anyway.
