Author bio
Captain W. E. Johns was William Earl Johns, born in Bengeo, Hertfordshire, in 1893. He grew up in the Hertford area and attended Hertford Grammar School. Before his fictional pilot Biggles became familiar to generations of readers, Johns had experienced military service and flying himself. That background gave him practical material for adventure stories, but it also meant his view of war included the fear and loss behind the excitement of an aerial mission.
His own flying career was dangerous.
Johns served in the First World War and trained as a pilot before flying bombers in France. In September 1918, his aircraft was brought down during a raid toward Mannheim. He was captured and spent the remaining part of the war as a prisoner. Afterward, his aviation work included instructing and recruiting. Those experiences were not a direct model for every Biggles adventure, but they helped him write about aircraft, crews and decisions made under pressure.
Writing and illustration gave that knowledge another outlet. Johns worked as an air correspondent, edited aviation material and illustrated books about flying. In 1932 he became editor of the new magazine Popular Flying. Biggles appeared in its first issue, and the stories were collected in Biggles The Camels Are Coming that year. A magazine character became the center of a long sequence of books, with flying remaining the means by which adventures could open into a much wider world.
The series did not stay in one war.
Biggles Learns To Fly looks back at the beginning of James Bigglesworth's aviation career, while Biggles Flies East places him in espionage during the First World War. Later stories move through other conflicts and into police work. Sergeant Bigglesworth C.I.D. opens the postwar phase, in which his skills become useful for investigating crime. Readers can choose an early flying story, an undercover assignment or a detective adventure, depending on which part of the character's long career interests them.
Johns also created protagonists beyond Biggles. Worrals, a young woman serving with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, was developed at the Air Ministry's request to encourage female recruitment. The Gimlet books followed a commando and widened his range of wartime adventure. He later wrote science fiction, including Kings of Space. Those different series kept his interest in action and capable characters, while changing the jobs, dangers and settings through which readers encountered them.
Friendship, initiative and professional skill are recurring strengths in his stories. Biggles usually works with companions rather than facing every problem alone, and the action often turns on observing a situation or making a quick practical choice. The changing settings allow the books to combine aviation with travel, rescues and investigations. They also carry the assumptions of the periods in which they were written, making their historical context part of the reading experience.
Johns died in 1968 while still working on a Biggles manuscript. The books continued to appear in new editions after his death. His most lasting character remains a pilot whose adventures grew far beyond the early short stories, linking a working knowledge of flying with an appetite for telling what happens next.
