Quantum

by Patricia Cornwell

2019

Captain Calli Chase, a NASA pilot and quantum physicist who also investigates cybercrime, responds to a security alarm in the tunnels beneath a research center on the eve of a classified launch. Traces of blood, a missing badge, and a supposed suicide point toward her missing twin sister and a threat to the mission.

Series background & context

The Captain Chase novels push Cornwell’s interest in science and technology into near future territory. Instead of a city morgue, the key settings are NASA facilities, underground tunnels, and the edge of space, where the line between cybercrime and physical sabotage gets dangerously thin.

The series follows Captain Callisto “Calli” Chase, a NASA pilot, quantum physicist, and cybercrime investigator. Calli is as comfortable in a clean room or cockpit as she is sifting through code, and she carries the same stubborn sense of duty that drives Kay Scarpetta, but pointed at a different set of threats. She is also a twin, and her complicated bond with her sister Carme runs through every part of the story.

In Quantum, a tripped alarm in the tunnels below a NASA research center on the eve of a secret launch leads Calli to dried blood, a missing security badge, and a suspicious death that may be staged. The clues point toward Carme, who has gone missing, and toward a plot that could damage not only a mission but national security. The confined spaces of the tunnels and the looming countdown clock give the book a tight, claustrophobic feel even as it gestures toward orbit.

Spin widens the canvas. After a hacked rocket launch ends in catastrophe, Calli is drawn into a confrontation with a shadowy adversary whose reach extends into government, space hardware, and the Chase family itself. Advanced implants, artificial intelligence, and experimental spacecraft play central roles, and Calli has to decide how much of her own body and mind she is willing to turn into tools.

The tone of the Captain Chase series is more overtly technological than Cornwell’s other work, but it still leans on the same core strengths, careful procedural detail, tense set pieces, and characters who carry lasting scars from their work. Readers see how small decisions in a lab or control room can have consequences measured in lives.

For anyone curious about a blend of crime fiction, space program research, and family drama, the Captain Chase books offer a compact, high energy duology that stands apart while still feeling like part of Cornwell’s larger world.
