The Front

by Patricia Cornwell

2008

In the follow up to At Risk, Garano is pushed to look into the unsolved rape and murder of a blind woman that may connect to the Boston Strangler legend. Working under Lamont’s political agenda and a loose coalition of small departments, he uncovers corruption much closer to home.

At Risk

by Patricia Cornwell

2006

Massachusetts state investigator Win Garano is yanked from training in Tennessee when ambitious DA Monique Lamont orders him to reopen a decades old murder as a showcase for her crime initiative. As he digs into the cold case, a brutal attack on Lamont shows the past is not finished.

Series background & context

The Winston Garano books center on Win Garano, a state investigator whose cases are as political as they are criminal. Where the Scarpetta series is rooted in autopsy rooms and long term relationships, these two shorter novels read like tight, high stakes assignments that could make or break a career.

Garano works for the Massachusetts State Police and is seconded to the office of Monique Lamont, a district attorney with sharp instincts and sharper ambitions. Lamont is always looking for a way to raise her profile, whether that means unveiling a bold crime initiative or appearing tough on television, and she is not shy about using Garano’s skills and reputation to do it.

In At Risk, she recalls him from training at a national forensics academy and orders him to reopen a decades old Tennessee murder as a showcase for her new program. The case looks straightforward at first, a ninety year old victim and a long forgotten crime scene, but fresh violence and a brutal attack on Lamont herself expose buried connections between past and present.

The Front sends Garano into another cold case, this time the rape and murder of a blind British woman that may tie into the legend of the Boston Strangler. He is forced to work with a loose coalition of small town departments branded as a “front” for modern policing, even as his boss uses the investigation to advance her own agenda and fend off rivals.

Across both books, Cornwell keeps the focus on how detectives operate when they answer not just to the law but to elected officials and the press. Garano must constantly weigh loyalty to his chain of command against his sense of what is right, all while dealing with class tensions, media spin, and the temptation to walk away.

The Winston Garano series is compact, contemporary, and more overtly political than Cornwell’s other work. It is well suited to readers who like their crime fiction fast moving, with a single investigator navigating the gray area where justice and public image collide.
