Callum Burke Books in Order

The Callum Burke books are hard edged crime thrillers with one foot in police work and the other in the underworld. At the center is Burke himself, a Belfast-born cop whose career has taken him far from home. By the time the series opens, he is coming to New York with experience from Hong Kong, and that gives the books a wider reach than a standard city detective story. These novels are interested in gangs, informants, dirty compromises, and the personal cost of living too close to violence.

In Rat Island, Burke arrives in 1995 New York as part of an international investigation into organised crime. The setup links Hong Kong, Chinatown, and Irish-American gangs, with the looming handover of Hong Kong adding extra pressure in the background. Burke's knowledge of East Asian crime and the Irish mob makes him valuable, but it also means he is the one sent in close. A lot of the tension comes from undercover work, shifting loyalties, and the fact that every step deeper into the case makes it harder for him to stay clean.

By The Sky Turned Black, Burke is working as an NYPD officer in Manhattan in 1997. A routine drug raid puts him in front of a horrifying crime scene and two dangerous Russian suspects who refuse to explain anything. At first it looks like the start of a gang war. Then the case begins to widen. The city is changing, the pressure is mounting, and Burke finds himself pulled toward forces that do not fit neatly into a simple cops versus criminals story.

What makes the series work is Burke himself. He is not a polished hero who strolls through a case and ties everything up. He is a man under strain, shaped by Belfast, by undercover work, and by jobs that ask him to get very close to people he may later help destroy. He can read a room, take punishment, and keep moving, but there is always a sense that the job is eating away at him. That gives the books their nervous energy.

The setting matters a lot here. Steele uses mid 1990s New York as a pressure cooker, a city full of narcotics squads, gangsters, hustlers, dockside deals, bars, back rooms, and neighborhoods changing faster than the people in them can manage. The books move fast, but they do not feel weightless. There is always a sense that the street level action belongs to something bigger, whether that is international organised crime, city politics, or the old scars Burke carries with him. If you like crime fiction that is gritty, mobile, and morally messy, this is the shape of the series.
