Calliope Reaper-Jones Books in Order

Amber Benson's Calliope Reaper-Jones series is urban fantasy with a workplace problem at its center: Callie's father is Death, and the family business is Death, Inc. Callie would prefer a normal New York life, complete with a real job, good clothes, dating, and as little family destiny as possible.

Unfortunately, destiny has other ideas.

When Death is kidnapped and a hostile takeover threatens the company, Callie is pulled into the afterlife's corporate machinery. She has to deal with demons, gods, monsters, dangerous magical objects, and relatives who have far more experience with death than she does. She is reluctant, sometimes overwhelmed, and never quite as prepared as the job demands. That is part of the fun.

The first book, Death's Daughter, introduces the basic setup. Callie is forced to step into her father's role and take on tasks that lead far beyond the ordinary world. From there, the series sends her through versions of Hell, Purgatory, and other mythic spaces, while still keeping one foot in the messiness of modern life. Callie wants independence, but she cannot escape the responsibilities that come with her name.

New York matters because it is where Callie tries to build a life that belongs to her. The city gives the series its everyday energy, while the supernatural side turns the familiar into something stranger. A work assignment can involve ancient history. A dinner can become a battle for the future of humanity. The dead do not stay neatly filed away.

The tone is quick, funny, and lightly chaotic.

Callie is supported, and sometimes challenged, by allies including Jarvis, her father's trusted assistant. Her family relationships remain important, too. The emotional thread is not only whether she can survive the next supernatural emergency. It is whether she can become her own person while taking on a role she never wanted.

The books build in publication order: Death's Daughter, Cat's Claw, Serpent's Storm, How to be Death, and The Golden Age of Death. Each adventure has its own immediate problem, but Callie's growth from reluctant heir to someone capable of leading the company gives the series its through line.

This is a good fit for readers who like their fantasy packed with mythology, monsters, sharp jokes, romantic complications, and a heroine who must learn that being in charge does not mean having every answer.
