Author bio
Amber Benson was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on January 8, 1977. She grew up performing, studying singing, dance, and acting, and appearing in local theater. Her family later moved to Florida as she pursued early acting work, then relocated to Los Angeles in 1992.
She was still a teenager when her screen career began, with early film roles in King of the Hill and The Crush. But Benson has never kept herself in one creative lane. Alongside acting, she has written for the stage and screen, directed films, produced projects, and built a substantial body of fiction and comics.
Many viewers first knew her as Tara Maclay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Tara's relationship with Willow made her an important part of the show's emotional center, and Benson appeared across three seasons. Her work on the series also led to comics featuring Willow and Tara, written with Christopher Golden.
Writing gave Benson another way to work with the kind of stories she enjoys: ghosts, witches, monsters, big feelings, and people trying to keep their footing when the supernatural gets personal.
With Golden, she cocreated Ghosts of Albion, a Victorian-era supernatural adventure that began as animated stories before expanding into books. The series follows siblings Tamara and William Swift as they inherit the dangerous job of protecting Britain from magical threats. Benson and Golden also wrote the eerie novella The Seven Whistlers, about a Vermont town troubled by a frightening old legend.
Her solo fiction includes the Calliope Reaper-Jones novels, which begin with Death's Daughter. Callie wants a stylish, independent life in New York, but her father is literally Death, and the family company is Death, Inc. The books mix workplace problems, mythology, demons, afterlife bureaucracy, and a heroine who would much rather not be in charge.
Benson took a different route with the Echo Park Coven novels, starting with The Witches of Echo Park. In these books, Lyse MacAllister returns to Los Angeles and discovers that her family history includes a coven of witches responsible for helping keep magic in balance. The series has a bigger, darker conflict, but it stays interested in friendship, loyalty, grief, and the work of becoming part of a community.
She has also written for younger readers, including Among the Ghosts, and contributed to the playful guidebooks Star and Marco's Guide to Mastering Every Dimension and The Magic Book of Spells. Her comics include the Clueless follow-ups, cowritten with Sarah Kuhn, which bring Cher, Dionne, and Tai into the complicated final stretch of high school.
Benson continues to move between writing, acting, voice work, and directing. In 2023, she cowrote and helped direct Slayers, an audio adventure set in the Buffyverse. Across all those formats, she keeps returning to the same useful question: what happens when ordinary life collides with something impossible?
