Breathe Books in Order

Sarah Crossan's Breathe series is a two-book dystopian story set in a world where clean air has become a commodity. Environmental collapse has left the atmosphere dangerously thin, and most survivors live inside the Pod, a sealed city where the Breathe corporation controls access to oxygen.

The first book, Breathe, follows three teenagers whose lives would not normally overlap. Quinn is a Premium, protected by his family's place inside the system. Bea is his closest friend, but she comes from an Auxiliary family and knows exactly how quickly money problems can become a matter of survival. Alina belongs to a secret resistance that believes trees can be replanted and the planet can recover.

When an operation goes wrong, the three are pushed beyond the Pod's walls. Their immediate problem is simple and terrifying: their oxygen supplies will not last. But the journey also forces them to see the world, and one another, differently. Quinn has to question the comforts he has always accepted. Bea has to decide what she is willing to risk. Alina must weigh the cause she believes in against the people caught up in it.

The story has the pace of a survival thriller, with a central conflict built around inequality, environmental damage, and a government willing to label opposition as terrorism. There is danger in the Outlands, but there is also the possibility that the official story about the world is incomplete.

Resist picks up after the resistance has been scattered. Quinn, Bea, and Alina are separated across the dead landscape and each heads toward Sequoia, a rumored refuge for people fighting the Pod's leadership. Meanwhile, Ronan, the former minister's son, is sent out with an elite force to hunt the survivors, even as his faith in the regime begins to crack.

The second book widens the world and raises the stakes. It keeps the focus on young people making hard choices while the adults and institutions around them protect their own power. Read the books in order, starting with Breathe, since Resist builds directly on the characters, conflicts, and consequences of the first novel.
