Author bio
Sarah Crossan grew up in Dublin and London. She studied Philosophy and Literature at the University of Warwick, completed a master's degree in Creative Writing, and later trained as an English and drama teacher at the University of Cambridge.
Teaching was her day job for a decade, in both England and the United States. It gave her a close view of the worries, jokes, friendships, and pressures that shape young people's lives, details that would later find their way into her fiction.
She kept writing alongside that work. In 2010, Crossan received an Edward Albee Fellowship, and by 2012 she had become a full-time writer. Her early books quickly established her as an author drawn to spare, direct storytelling, often told in verse.
Her first novel, The Weight of Water, follows Kasienka, a Polish girl trying to settle in England while her mother searches for the father who left them. It is a quiet story about immigration, loneliness, swimming, and finding a way to belong. Apple and Rain returns to family upheaval, as a teenager's long-absent mother comes back into her life with a younger daughter in tow.
Crossan's books make room for big feelings without making them simple.
That approach is especially clear in One, her novel about conjoined twins Grace and Tippi. The sisters want friends, love, privacy, and the chance to be understood as two separate people, even as their lives are physically intertwined. The book won the CILIP Carnegie Medal, the CBI Book of the Year Award, the YA Book Prize, and the CLiPPA Poetry Award in 2016.
She has also written outside realistic contemporary fiction. Breathe and Resist imagine a future where breathable air is scarce and controlled by a powerful system. In Moonrise, a teenager reconnects with his brother on death row. We Come Apart, written with Brian Conaghan, follows two vulnerable teenagers in North London whose growing bond is tested by violence, prejudice, and family pressure.
Her later work has moved across age groups and forms. Toffee, published in the United States as Being Toffee, follows a runaway girl who finds shelter with an older woman living with dementia. Her first adult novel, Here Is the Beehive, explores secret grief after an affair ends in sudden loss. Hey, Zoey turns to a strained marriage and an unexpected AI companion, while Where The Heart Should Be is set during the Irish famine.
For younger readers, Crossan wrote the warm, funny Fizzy stories, beginning with Fizzy and Bandit. She also edited Tomorrow is Beautiful, a collection of poems chosen to offer comfort, hope, and a pause from the noise of daily life.
Crossan's work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages. She lives and works in East Sussex, and continues to write books that take young people, families, and complicated choices seriously.
