Series background & context
This series opens the map. Instead of staying in one town, it follows an ancient network of Others who fight injustice and push back against people trying to control magic, bloodlines, and entire communities. The romances matter, but there is a bigger conflict moving behind them from the start.
It still begins with people.
Sleepwalker starts on deeply personal ground, with Savon and Nate, lost years, dream visits, and family damage in Silvertail Ridge. Dreams of Change keeps that emotional thread going while adding secret agendas and the pressure of powerful parents. The books feel intimate at first, even when the mythology is already starting to widen.
Then the series keeps expanding. Finding Hawk and Chasing Dove bring in journals, relics, reservation politics, prophecy, and the sense that old stories were warnings for a reason. By the time Shattered Reality and Embracing Reality arrive, the scope has moved well beyond one hometown. Travel, buried history, and ancient enemies all matter.
This one has more quest energy than Rivers's town based series.
That does not mean it leaves romance behind. The couples still drive the heart of each book, but love is tied to survival, legacy, and the question of who can be trusted when the wrong people want power. There is a steady thread of found family here too, only on a wider scale.
If you like paranormal romance with more mythology, more motion, and a stronger sense of long game plotting, Branches of Emrys is a strong fit. Read it in order, because the lore builds quickly and later books rely on earlier discoveries.
