Combustible Books in Order

This is one of Rivers's most grounded worlds. No hidden species, no magical councils, just firefighters, detectives, neighbors, teachers, and the kind of small town trouble that can still feel plenty dangerous. The series is contemporary romance, but it keeps a nice undercurrent of suspense.

The firehouse gives it shape.

Heart on Fire starts with a one night encounter that refuses to stay in the past, and the later books keep circling people connected to that same orbit of firefighters and friends. Falling Star brings in a woman hiding from fame and trauma, Sweet Tooth turns toward family pressure and second chances, and Backburn adds arson, police work, and an old flame that never really cooled.

Even without the paranormal pieces, Rivers keeps many of her favorite emotional beats. Characters carry old hurt. Families complicate simple choices. Love usually shows up when the leads are least ready for it, and outside pressure forces them to decide whether they are brave enough to keep it.

Small towns remember everything.

That matters because privacy is scarce in these books. A neighbor can become family. A case can become personal. A workplace friendship can turn into the one person keeping someone steady when everything else is tilting.
