The Books To Die For series follows Jacob, or Jake, Martin, a former software engineer who has traded office work for handyman jobs and a quieter life. He is not a police officer, private investigator, or lawyer. He is simply the person who keeps finding himself close to a murder, then finding it hard to walk away from unanswered questions.

Fred, Jake's golden retriever, is there from the start. Fred is more than a mascot. His curiosity, nose, and habit of turning up at just the wrong, or right, place regularly point Jake toward clues people have missed. The books also make room for the everyday bond between a man and his dog.
