Bodyguard Books in Order

The Bodyguard series follows Hilja Ilveskero, a Finnish bodyguard trained in New York, and it feels different from a traditional police procedural right from the start. Hilja is not a detective waiting for a case file to land on her desk. She works close to the people who attract danger, which means money, politics, old grudges, and personal secrets are never far away.

The first book, The Bodyguard, sets the tone fast. Hilja is protecting a demanding client tied to Russian business interests when a burst of anger ends the job. Soon after, she is drugged, loses part of her memory, and learns that the same client is dead. Instead of working a case from the outside, Hilja is suddenly inside it, hiding, guessing, and trying to stay alive long enough to understand what happened.

Lehtolainen writes Hilja as sharp, self-reliant, and often guided by instinct. She is very good at reading threat, noticing who is lying, and staying calm when a room turns ugly. At the same time, she is not cool in a distant, polished way. She is direct. She can be impulsive. She gets herself into trouble because she keeps moving instead of backing off. That makes her convincing as a bodyguard and just as convincing as a thriller lead.

There is also a deeper personal thread running underneath the action. Hilja's father killed her mother when Hilja was a small child, and that history keeps pressing on the present. In The Lion of Justice, her trip to Italy to see her lover David Stahl turns into another dangerous search when he disappears and organized crime closes in. In The Devil's Cubs, a wedding security assignment opens the door to hidden family truths and forces Hilja even closer to the violence that shaped her childhood.

So while these books deliver chase scenes, disappearances, mobsters, suspicious clients, and shifting loyalties, they are not only about external danger. They are also about identity. Hilja is always asking, in one way or another, who can be trusted, what a person is hiding, and how much of the past can really be left behind.

The settings matter too. Finland is still central, but the series stretches outward into a more international world of border-crossing crime, business deals, private security, and wealthy people who think protection can solve everything. The result is a faster, more outward-facing kind of suspense than the Maria Kallio books. If you like capable heroines, tangled loyalties, and thrillers where the main character is often one step from becoming the next target, this is the Leena Lehtolainen series to pick up first.
