Blodstormen is John Ajvide Lindqvist moving into crime fiction without leaving the darker parts of his imagination behind. The series follows a group of characters rather than a single lone detective, and that matters. At its center are Julia Malmros, a crime novelist and former police officer, and Kim Ribbing, a brilliant, damaged young hacker with money, scars, and very little trust in other people. Around them orbit teenager Astrid Helander, police investigators, old enemies, and people with reasons to lie.

The Writing in the Water begins with a shock. On Midsummer's Eve, a dockside celebration in the archipelago turns into a massacre, and Julia is close enough to get pulled in. What starts as one vicious crime quickly opens outward into business, politics, cross-border intrigue, and old personal ties. Kim is an odd match for Julia, which is part of the fun. She brings experience and instinct. He brings nerve, technical skill, and a way of seeing systems from the side.

But Blodstormen is not just about plot mechanics. Lindqvist keeps returning to trauma, revenge, loyalty, and the question of what damage people can live with. In The Room in the Ground, the focus tightens. Kim is keeping the doctor who abused him captive in the basement of his new house, and the whole series becomes more claustrophobic. Julia is still trying to understand him, Astrid is drawn deeper into the adults' mess, and the police investigation turns the novel into a tense cat-and-mouse game.

Modern Sweden is not just backdrop here. The books move between archipelago calm, city apartments, police offices, and extremist networks, and the setting keeps reminding you how thin the line is between ordinary life and organized brutality. As the trilogy goes on, the scale widens from a single atrocity to bigger questions about polarization and public fear. Even so, the heart of the series stays in the relationships, who protects whom, who uses whom, and who can still be trusted after the worst thing happens.

Expect crime novels with a horror writer's instincts.

That means sharp set pieces, sudden violence, and a steady interest in what terror does to the body and mind, even when there are no monsters in sight. If you want a clean procedural, this is probably not it. If you want a thriller series with damaged people, uneasy humor, strong momentum, and a real sense that past injuries never stay buried, Blodstormen is a very good place to start. Read it in order. The character arcs matter.
