Platserna Books in Order

Platserna is a loose horror trilogy, not a neat same-cast saga. What links the books is the idea of impossible places, spaces that sit beside everyday Sweden and slowly expose what the people who stumble into them are hiding from themselves. The English titles, I Am Behind You, I Always Find You, and I Am the Tiger, make it sound almost like a chant, which fits. These books are about being followed by something you cannot explain.

In I Am Behind You, the setup is brutally simple. Several campers wake to find their caravan site gone, replaced by an endless field of clipped grass beneath a sky that no longer behaves like a real sky. There are eight adults, two children, a dog, a cat, and nowhere sensible to go. The terror comes partly from the mystery of the place, but also from the way pressure strips the group down. Old hurts, private shames, and ugly instincts rise fast.

The place is never just scenery.

I Always Find You shifts gears in a clever way. Instead of another trapped ensemble, Lindqvist follows a young man named John Lindqvist in Stockholm in 1985, living in a cramped courtyard building beside Brunkeberg Tunnel and trying to make it as a magician. The book has the texture of lived memory, but it tilts into the uncanny when a locked shower room and a dark substance in a bathtub open a path to the other place. Desire, community, performance, and violence all get tangled together there.

By the time I Am the Tiger arrives, the trilogy leans harder into crime fiction without giving up its supernatural core. A faded crime reporter and his teenage nephew circle a wave of suicides, drug dealing, and a shadowy figure known as X. Bit by bit, the Stockholm underworld starts to connect back to the field and the other reality behind it. The result is less a tidy explanation than a widening pattern. The books talk to one another through images, places, and consequences rather than through a single straight plotline.

That looseness is part of the appeal.

As a series, Platserna is for readers who like horror that is both high-concept and very human. Lindqvist can be funny, grubby, tender, and nasty in the same chapter. He is interested in what people do when the world stops following the rules, but he is just as interested in embarrassment, longing, status, addiction, and the stories people tell about themselves. Read the books in order if you can. The connections grow stranger, and richer, as you go.
