The Blackbird Mountain books are family-centered historical romances set in late nineteenth-century Appalachia, but family saga is probably the best way to think about them. At the center is the Norgaard clan, Norwegian kin making a life on a remote mountain farm where work, grief, loyalty, and old grudges are always close at hand.

In Sons of Blackbird Mountain, widowed Aven Norgaard leaves Norway for Appalachia after her husband's death and comes to the home of his cousins, three brothers who brew hard cider on their land. She arrives as an outsider and housekeeper, but her presence unsettles the balance between the brothers almost at once. Jorgan is steady, Haakon is bold and impulsive, and Thor is Deaf, guarded, and carrying pain he does not know how to put into words for the people around him.

That mix gives the first book its pull. The romance is important, but so are belonging, communication, pride, and the way one new person can bring long-buried fractures to the surface. Bischof uses the farm, the orchard, and the isolated mountain setting to keep the emotional stakes close and physical at the same time. You can feel the labor of the place, the weather, and the way a household can become its own small world.

Daughters of Northern Shores widens the story without losing that closeness. Haakon, after years away on the North Atlantic ice trade, returns to a family already under strain, and the books lean harder into questions of forgiveness, rivalry, and what it takes to come home changed. There is also a fierce feud with a neighboring farm, which adds danger and gives the series some of its rougher edges.

What makes this series stand out is that it never feels like a simple triangle or a neat period romance in costume. Thor's place in the story matters. So does Aven's immigrant past. So do the brothers' habits of hurting one another and protecting one another in the same breath. The books are interested in how love works inside a household, not just between two people.

Expect heart, weather, hard labor, and plenty of bruised pride.

The tone is serious but hopeful, with faith woven through the characters' choices rather than dropped on top of them. If you like historical fiction that stays rooted in place, gives its side characters real weight, and lets family bonds matter as much as romance, Blackbird Mountain is one of Joanne Bischof's richest story worlds.
