Series background & context
Billionaire's Obsession is where RS Elliot lays out her core romance formula. The series is full of rich, driven men, women who should know better than to get involved with them, and setups where work, money, and attraction are tangled from page one. If you want the most direct introduction to Elliot's style, this is the place to start.
The bosses are the point.
The series opens with Prequel to Beauty and the Boss and Beauty and the Boss, which introduce Luke Thorpe, a demanding billionaire employer, and the kind of instant chemistry that gets complicated fast once a job is involved. From there, Prequel to Lawyer and the Boss and Lawyer and the Boss shift into second-chance territory, with a bad-boy hero from the past coming back as both rescuer and boss. The books are linked by mood more than by one long plot, so each romance can stand on its own.
That standalone structure continues through the rest of the series. Nanny and the Boss takes the billionaire fantasy into single-dad territory, with a one-night encounter turning into a very awkward job. Teacher and the Boss goes darker and more possessive, pushing into mafia romance. Innkeeper and the Boss heads in a different direction again, trading sleek business settings for a family inn, a small-town backdrop, and a clash over legacy, money, and who gets to decide the future of a place.
What ties all of these books together is the power imbalance. Elliot likes heroes who are used to control, whether they are CEOs, heirs, employers, or powerful men with money to solve problems. The heroines are rarely passive about it. They might need the job, the paycheck, or the practical arrangement, but they still push back. That tension, wanting someone while also resenting what they represent, carries most of the series.
The tone can shift more than the matching titles suggest. Some books feel like straightforward workplace romance. Some lean into family care, small-town change, or old wounds that never healed properly. Teacher and the Boss is the outlier if you want something more dramatic, while Innkeeper and the Boss feels closer to enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy with a warmer local setting. So even inside one series, there is room to pick the flavor that sounds best.
That range helps.
Readers who like connected standalones will probably do well here. You can read in publication order for the cleanest sense of how Elliot's romance world developed, or you can jump straight to the trope you like best. The prequels are short, but they are useful if you enjoy seeing the spark before the bigger emotional mess arrives.
At heart, Billionaire's Obsession is a series about fantasy framed in familiar contemporary terms. The men are wealthy and hard to resist. The women are pulled into their orbit through work, circumstance, or old history. The stories move quickly, the chemistry does a lot of the talking, and the emotional payoff comes from watching powerful people learn that control is not much help once love is involved.
